Physical Description		Sofie has heavy scarring on her right knee, resulting from an old injury. She also uses a cane, a result of the same old injury. She wears glasses, due to very poor vision, and a profound allergy to retinax. Also has copious freckles.

Personality & Traits
General Overview
Generally a cheerful, good-natured sort with a good sense of humor and a tendency towards wry sarcasm. Does have a temper if pushed too far - the results tend to be short, but loud. She does not have true post-traumatic stress disorder, but is prone to occasional flashbacks in her sleep, and there are some things which she does not talk about unless ordered to. She also carries a phaser set to stun at all times when she is on duty ever since she got hurt - she keeps her certifications and concealed carry permits current, and the weapon is usually in the pocket of her lab coat when she is working, and gets locked in her desk drawer when she's off duty. She tries very hard to be open-minded, and gets along fine with most species, but tends to have issues with Ferengi. It's not that she hates them - she simply tends to be very nervous around them, and, were she to admit the fact to herself, she doesn't trust them any further than she can throw them. She feels guilty about having issues with the entire species due to a bad experience with one member of it, so she generally makes it appoint to avoid them as much as possible, thus avoiding the whole issue. Sofie takes the Hippocratic Oath VERY seriously, and she's been known to pitch a fit when the Prime Directive prevents her from following it. She holds strongly to the view that no matter who someone is or what they have done, once they enter her sickbay, they're all her patients, and they're all equals, and they'll all get the same degree of care - she always gives it everything she's got. While she was stationed as a combat medic before she got hurt, once she was finished treating her own troops, she would often care for enemy soldiers who had been left for dead by their own units. She had her CO's blessing, but a number of people in the platoon thought she was nuts. Her universal response to such accusations of insanity in the course of doing her job is "I swear by Apollo Physician and Asclepius and Hygieia and Panaceia and all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfill according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant."
Strengths & Weaknesses
Sofie is an excellent scientist, and an excellent physician. She is quite passionate and compassionate about her work and about everything else. Her extensive experience as a patient herself has given her a strong empathy with her patients, and her main goal is to see the crew she serves with happy and healthy. In particular, she makes it a point to always give patients a reasonable idea of how much something is going to hurt before potentially painful procedures. She has a strong independent streak - if she can do it herself, she will, and she will keep trying until she gets it. However, she is willing to ask for help when she needs it. She knows when to back down and when to stand her ground in an argument, whether dealing with enlisted crew or flag rank. She was a varsity athlete in several sports at the Academy, and while her bad knee prevents her from doing anything high-impact, she nonetheless keeps in excellent shape, and can likely swim circles around anyone else on the base. ***** As a result of previous injuries, Sofie's mobility is quite limited. She tires easily, and cannot walk long distances without her cane. Walking even with the cane is painful. She compensates in sickbay by having plenty of stools in strategic locations to keep her off her feet, but she is generally a poor candidate for away teams. Despite her mobility problems, however, she dislikes being picked up or carried, and much prefers that others ask if she needs help before attempting, say, to help her up on a biobed – the one exception to that is her husband. She can't spell worth beans. She is generally quite patient, especially with children, but when frustrated or tired, she has very little patience with herself. Her vision is terrible - without her glasses, she is functionally blind. Hiding her glasses is an excellent way of getting yourself sworn at in multiple languages. She learned a long time ago that she would never be able to save every patient who comes under her care, and in theory, she accepts that. In practice, however, she has occasionally been known to fall apart over losing patients.

Quite content with the present, really. But she wouldn't say no to having a drug, disease, or procedure named after her.

Sofie grew up in Gill's Rock, WI, a quiet little town at the northern tip of the Door Peninsula. She is the eldest of three children and spent much of her youth tearing around with her brother and sister on the beach or kicking a soccer ball around.

She determined from an early age that she would be a doctor when she grew up, and, wishing to see the galaxy, went on to Starfleet Academy and Starfleet Medical. While at the Academy, working on a Premed/Chemistry double-major, she met another young chemistry student named Matt - the two were married shortly after graduating from the Academy. Matt requested and received an assignment to HQ in San Francisco while Sofie was in med school, and used the opportunity to earn a Ph.D of his own in chemistry. Their first assignment after shipping out was with the 748th Marine detachment, stationed on the USS Odysseus out near the Romulan border, where Sofie served as a combat medic.

About two years after she shipped out, Sofie was part of a medical team sent down to a space port of dubious morality on the planet Osyol XI as part of relief efforts after an earthquake. While scrambling through wreckage, looking for survivors, she accidentally stumbled upon the stash of a Ferengi drug smuggler. Afraid that her tricorder would pick up on his goods (which it did - he was later tried and convicted), the Ferengi shot her, hitting her in the right knee, and left her, assuming her to be dead. She was not dead, but the cartilage in her knee was virtually destroyed and what little was left was so badly damaged that it had to be surgically removed. Attempts to regrow it were only partially successful. This has left her with what amounts to the arthritis from you-know-where in that knee. She can walk on it unassisted, but it's quite painful, and she generally uses a cane to minimize the stress to the area.

Obviously, injuries so severe limited her usefulness as a combat medic, and she and Matt were transferred out of the marine corps and served several years aboard the USS Ryazan. It was later found that with her mobility difficulties and severely limited ability to serve on an away team, she would do better on a starbase than a starship, and she and Matt were transferred to Starbase Mir as Assistant Chief Medical Officer and Assistant Science Chief, respectively. She has now been moved back to the marine corps as a CMO rather than a combat medic, and she and Matt have been transferred to Starbase Gibralter, just in time for Sofie to come off of maternity leave.
