She generally keeps her hair pulled back in a braid or ponytail to be out of her way. She has a few old scars from phaser burns – she doesn’t much like to talk about how she came by them – as well as a scar from a c-section. She’s also got a tattoo of a turtle on one shoulder.
Personality & Traits
General Overview
Madeleine is generally easy-going and easy to get along with – she generally encourages her staff members to call her Madeleine instead of Colonel Kelly. She is, however, very blunt, and will call things exactly like she sees them – no holds barred. She is most definitely one to speak her mind, but she will hear another person out.

On the job, she is infamous for her persistence and tenacity – early in her career, this earned her the nickname ‘Mongoose’ from her first supervisor, because she will jump in, grab the cobra by the hood, and not let go until she has all the answers. Also like the mongoose, she is by nature very inquisitive. The name stuck, and there are a number of people in various places who have permission to call her that.

She’s got a good sense of humor, and is always up for a good joke.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths:

Madeleine is very observant, and an excellent scientist. Her Academy minor was in chemistry, and she can generally follow what Sciences is telling her about her evidence without much translation. Her first love is forensics, and she’s good at picking up on the subtle nuances of a crime scene. She doesn’t take kindly to her crime scene being disturbed before she arrives unless it’s absolutely necessary. She’s been in enough interrogation rooms to have become very good at reading body language. She only wishes she were as good at hiding it herself, but she's not.

She’s very persistent, and she will not close a case until she has the answers – ALL of the answers. Quite tenacious, she will fight like a cat if she feels she’s been backed into a corner.

Like most security personnel, she is a very sharp shot with a phaser, and always carries one when she is on duty. While she does have a concealed carry permit, she doesn’t generally use it, preferring to keep her weapon openly in her holster unless she has good reason not to. She also has some experience with EOD and, in a pinch, can disarm simple explosives. She prefers to leave such matters to the bomb squad, however – they’re the experts, and it’s their job for a reason.

She maintains current first aid and CPR certifications.

She’s a talented writer and an avid muscician.

Weaknesses:

Madeleine’s got a bit of a firecracker temper. She’s not one to get violent except in self-defense, but she’s been known to lose her patience with the universe at large, and when she does, she will let you know EXACTLY what is on her mind. She’s not generally one to raise her voice – but she doesn’t have to raise it in order to make a point. She has at least learned to keep some of the more acidic comments to herself.

She expects herself to be Superman, and has been known to beat herself up when there’s a case that she can’t crack, or can’t crack fast enough – there are a few past cases that still haunt her present. There are presently only two people who can talk any sense into her in that regard – one is her husband, and the other is a previous supervisor.

When working a case, she has a tendency to get VERY tied up in it, often to the point of working ridiculous hours, skipping sleep and subsisting on coffee. Her husband is the only one who can talk sense into her about that without orders to the effect, and even he can’t do it when she really gets going. People thinks she works obscene hours now? They should see what she was like before she had a husband and kids to come home to. However, much as she tries to convince herself otherwise, she can’t keep that up indefinitely, and sooner or later, she WILL hit crashpoint.

She’s asthmatic, strictly allergy induced. It’s well controlled, provided that she doesn't get ambushed by any peanuts, she does just fine.

She has a number of allergies, the most severe one being to peanuts. If she eats an innocent chocolate chip cookie that’s been sitting on a plate with a peanut butter cookie, she will likely go into anaphylactic shock in under thirty seconds. For this reason, she wears a medical ID and carries an epipen, complete with helpful illustrations on the box for anyone who’s never used one before. She can also smell a peanut from fifty paces, and considers baked goods to be suspect until proven otherwise.
Ambitions
Quite happy where she is for the time being, but she's considered going back to the Academy to teach Forensics some day.

History
Madeleine grew up the eldest of four children in St. Louis, Missouri. Her father is an anthropology professor at Washington University, and her mother is a quality control chemist for a chemical manufacturer. She spent much of her childhood practicing music, playing sports, or climbing trees with her brother and sisters.

An older cousin whom she idolized growing up was a helm officer on a starship, and Madeleine grew up with aspirations to join Starfleet someday – though what she thought she was going to do there tended to depend on the week that you asked her. In high school, she became quite interested in forensic science. After graduating in the top five percent of her class, she enrolled in the Academy, where she quickly found that she liked the structured environment of the Marine Corps. She took her first class in forensics, and never looked back, quickly declaring a Security major with a focus in forensics.

After graduating, she shipped out aboard the USS Daniels as an Investigations officer, where she quickly became known for her persistence, or, as one colleague put it, ‘Madeleine Jefferson is a stubborn little cuss.’ Seven years later aboard McKinley Station, she met a young Intel officer named Nate, fresh out of the Academy. The two soon fell in love and were married less than a year later.
