Cook Book!!

In the past there had been talk of a Fleet Cookbook, I know we have some good cooks out there. Please send me any recopies you like. To make it even more fun and interesting please do it by character and ship. For example I'd submit one as Admiral Wilson Starbase Gibralter and my recipe would be No Bake Cookies. I'll collect all recipes and save them until I have enough to publish the cookbook. It will be sent to anyone who would like a copy of it as a word file. I think this would be fun and a chance to see how many different recopies we can collect. Please make sure you title it as Appetizer, Salad, Main Dish, Casserole, Desert ETC.

Trivia Time!!!!!!!

While most Trekkies will have known this detail for decades, this is the first time that Uhura has been given a first name on screen: Nyota. Gene Roddenberry never came up with a first name for her, so many thought this meant she did not have one, although in literature, Uhura is often referred to as Nyota by her comrades, and she is also referred to as Nyota Uhura in the DC Comics publication "Who's Who in Star Trek". There are several nods to this history in the movie: first, when Kirk first meets (and hits on) Uhura in a bar and tells her, "if you don't tell me your name, I'm gonna have to make one up," and then when she refuses to tell Kirk her first name throughout the film.

The character that Bruce Greenwood plays, Captain Christopher Pike, was the commanding officer of the USS Enterprise in the unaired Star Trek pilot episode, Star Trek: The Cage. In that episode, Pike was portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter. Initially, the episode was rejected but when a second pilot was ordered, Hunter dropped out of the series so the part was rewritten and recast with William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk. The footage from the unaired pilot was later woven into the episode Star Trek: The Menagerie: Part I.

Majel Barrett, the wife of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, is the voice of the Enterprise computer. She'd also been the computer voice in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, and had played Pike's first officer in Star Trek: The Cage. She completed her voice-over work from her home, two weeks before her death on December 18, 2008.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It has come to my attention that there has been harassment going on around the fleet towards several of our members. Let me be clear now and forever more. THIS. IS. NOT. TOLERATED. It clearly states in our rules and regulations that harassing of any kind can and most likely will result in your expulsion from the fleet. We founded this fleet five years ago in the effort to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for our simmers. Anyone detracting from this is at cross purposes with the Admiralty. Anyone up to this point has a free pass and recommend that you USE IT and start fresh with your fellow simmers. From this point on we will begin building a case against anyone* that decides they are above this ruling. This is not written in reference to any in particular; so before I see a million emails in my inbox complaining that I am attacking you let assure you that this was intended for EVERYONE and am in no way singling one individual out.

Thank you for your time and adherence to this notice.

Admiral Michael A. Tabolt
Director of Fleet Operations
Quicksilver Fleet

*Admirals are not exempt from this notice. If you feel that any member of the Admiralty is harassing you follow the chain of Command and contact another member. An investigation will commence. Thank you.

I want to thank Admiral Tabolt for filling in for me and doing such an outstanding job on the newsletter for me. Please also join with me in extending congratulations to Admiral Tabolt and his wife on the birth of their second child, a girl.

I am going to bring back monthly interviews of captain's something I used to do. So captains be on the lookout. I will pick one at random each month and interview you. I will email you the questions and you can email me back your responses. Once I have all the captain's done I'll move onto the executive officers and so on.
In the past there had been talk of a Fleet Cookbook, I know we have some good cooks out there. Please send me any recopies you like. That said it's now Trivia Time!!!

Contrary to popular belief, neither Captain Kirk nor anyone else ever said, "Beam me up, Scotty," in any episode.

The series' opening theme has lyrics that were never used (although they were published in the book "The Making of Star Trek", by Stephen J. Whitfield). They were written by Gene Roddenberry, not so that they would be sung on-screen (which he never intended or even wanted), but so that he could take a co-writer credit and receive a residual payments for the theme's use alongside the theme's composer, Alexander Courage. Roddenberry did this nearly a year after the show was first aired, taking advantage of a contract clause that Courage claimed not to have been aware of. Although Courage never took the matter to court, he expressed resentment on numerous occasions to the way Roddenberry "swindled" 50% of the popular theme's royalties from him. Roddenberry's response was, "Hey, I have to get some money somewhere. I'm sure not going to get it out of the profits of Star Trek." After the first season of Star Trek, the two never worked together again - although the music has been used in various forms in many of the spin-off projects.

If you have any Trivia that you'd like to include by all means send it to me.

Until Next Month.

That said it's now TRIVIA TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Episode Shore Leave has the only scene in which the U.S.S. Enterprise is seen orbiting a planet from right to left. The I.S.S. Enterprise also does this briefly in the parallel universe, in the pre-credits sequence of Mirror, Mirror, but by the beginning of Act I, it is again orbiting from left to right.

Grace Lee Whitney was supposed to be the lead female character, hence her prominent role as Yeoman Janice Rand in the first season. However, the producers let go of the character after the first season, much to the fans' regret. Whitney, however was asked back for most of the Star Trek movies, reprising her role as Janice.

In the hallways of the Enterprise there are tubes marked "GNDN", these initials stand for "goes nowhere does nothing".

Actor Mark Lenard, best known for his role as Sarek, Spock's father, was the first actor to play a member of all three of the major alien races: Romulan (Balance of Terror), Vulcan (Journey to Babel and other entries), and Klingon (Star Trek: The Motion Picture).

The slanting crawlway that leads up to the warp-drive nacelles is referred to as a "Jefferies tube." This is a reference to art director Walter M. Jefferies.

In several episodes, prop beverage bottles were modified from existing alcohol bottles. Aldeberan Whiskey bottles were Cuervo Gold 1800 Tequila bottles. Bottles used for Saurian Brandy were George Dickel Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey carafes.
